Default Battle Flags in the Valley, May 1862?

Does anyone know which Confederate units of Jackson's and Ewell's Divisions that participated in the 1862 Valley Campaign had already been issued ANV "Battle Flags" by early May 1862? I know Elzey's Brigade and the Maryland Line had received battle flags by this time, but I'm unsure of the rest.

Default Flags

Its a complicated issue Confederate flags. There were several issues of flags to the ANV. There actually were several patterns...with suttle differences in trim, # of stars etc. I believe that during the valley campaign, units may have been issued the square St. Andrews cross flags...but with orange trim along three edges (excluding the hoist). These were bunting flags. However I have to point out that this pattern may actually have been issued afterwards. (I told you it is complicated!)

There also was 12 star cotton flags with yellow or orange trim and 12 star silk flags...which were of a pinkish/red hue! I believe some of Ewell's people had these silk flags. But I am sorry I cant answer your central question as to which specific units had them.

Not many of these wonderful silk or cotton flags survive...but many bunting ones do...Thank goodnes.

BTW: There is a print that artist Don Troioni (sp.?) that shows CS flags being issued...may be worth going to his site and seeing if any info is there.

I will see what I can find in my books at home...and will post more if I find some pertinent info.

VS..etc

Thanks VS. Anything you can find will be a great help. I've continued looking myself, but I haven't found too much. I'lll check Troiani's site and see what I can come up with.

Another suggestion :
google 'Civil War message board' Once there find the 'CW flag' page and post and/or search your question. There are people there that really know about these things.

B schulte, the 15th Alabama, of Ewell's Division carried a 1st silk issue battle flag. You can see a picture of it here:

Greg Biggs and Devereux Cannon say that some units in Jackson's Valley Campaign carried 1st National flags.

Not sure which regiments, but apparently some did.
Cheers.
