Default 28th USCT and General Malone

In the past few months, this board has had a lot of discussion about Ft. Pillow and General Forrest actions in that battle. I don't recall, I may have missed it, but it seems that nothing was said about the actions of General William Malone and the 28th USCT at Petersburg. Of course, this action was very different than that at Ft. Pillow being that it was the 28th USTC was on the offence instead of the defence.

As of yet, I have not had a chance to look for answers to these two questions. First, what happened to General Malone in reguards to this actions. Second What became the fate of Generals Ledlie and Ferrero because of there actions.

I'm not sure of a specific incident at the Crater involving Billy Mahone and the 28th USCT but there have been accusations of black troops being killed as they tried to surrender. I'm sure this happened, but I don't think there has really been evidence that Mahone participated in the slaughter of surrendering USCT men. Not that I recall at least. I think Mahone did inflame the passions of his men a bit with some talk of black troops attacking their homes, but I don't think he was personally involved.

Ledlie was relieved of command but Ferrero was not, although he did not follow his division to the Army of the James. He was sent over the command the Bermuda Hundred defenses, which was something of a punishment I suppose.

Respectfully

Richard,

Kevin Levin over at Civil War Memory is particularly interested in the topic of the Crater:
http://civilwarmemory.typepad.com/civil_war_memory

I'll try to shoot him an email and see if he has anything to add to the discussion. He also has a Thesis paper I believe online somewhere referring to the Crater. I'll try to dig that up too and post a link.

EDIT: Kevin was kind enough to send me the link. It's at: http://www.stab.org/faculty/klevin/K...ter.Memory.pdf

I encourage everyone to check it out. It's very interesting reading.

Thank you, Brett, for the link to Mr. Levin's thesis. It's links like this that keep me from attacking my "to read" stack. May your tribe increase.
