Jackson's Charges Against Garnett

Jackson filed a total of seven charges against Garnett for court marshalling. General gist is he was livid Garnett took independent action to pull his people out of the Battle of Kernstown against any directives from the top. The "Stonewall rules" call for worst case scenario of holding one's position until extra help could be brought onto the field. Though reinforcements were on the way Garnet expended his ordinance at a very hot spot in the battlefield. Is there any overwhelming evidence brought forward by any contemporary scholars that indicate the charges were justified? By character, Garnett was anything but a coward or shirker by most accounts.

I don't think the charges were justified, as I understand the situation.

Garnett was fully justified in retiring. Jackson had stuck him in an impossible situation thanks to his own mishandling of the situation.

Jackson ran his own show. Independent thinking was disallowed. Garnett did what he thought he had to do. Jackson disagreed.

I think the unintentional positive benefits of Kernstown tend to overshadow Jackson's failings in the battle. Just a poorly managed affair. Not one of Jackson's best moments.
