Hi, I would just like to ask if anyone
could give me some information on Fort Wagner
where I might find information on Fort Wagner?
Also I was wondering if anyone knew of Union troops
raiding, fighting, etc. around the Coastal Georgia
area? You see around where I live (southeastern Georgia)
was a small skirmish between Union troops and militia,
civilians, or maybe regular Confederate troops. The Union
troops are reported to have landed at Brunswick, Georgia, not far
from Savannah, Georgia. They pushed forward and defeated
the militia, civilians, etc. that opposed them (not many opposed them) . This skirmish is said to have taken place in or around 1862 or
1863. It happened in a town called "Waynesville". Any information
on this would be greatly appreciated!!! God Bless You All!!

Fort Wagner (Battery Wagner) was the most famous cause the 54th Mass. (black regiment) lost half their strength trying to take the fort and other regiments that followed had heavy casualties as well. It is known that Col. Robert G. Shaw is buried with his men and that the War Department asked his parents if they wished to have his body brought home. Mrs. Shaw said "No. Let him be buried with his men." The fort was never taken.

There's alot about Battery Wagner, just look every where you can online, in book stores and your local library.

You may want to read Timothy Bradshaw's "Battery Wagner" but personally I prefer Stephen Wise's "Gate of Hell."
