Forgot about the M-36 Jackson and it is one handsome vehicle. Based on the 76mm M-10 Wolverine, its 90mm gun had enough punch to take on the Germans with confidence. We've got one of these in Woodside, CA in the private tank museum.
A favorite tactic of the tank destroyers was to send out recce jeeps to spot the German armor. They then guided the tank destroyers into a position of advantage where they could snipe at the Germans. Another tactic was to wait by a bend in the road with its front facing the escape route and the turret in reverse. As soon as Jerry appeared, blam! It was hit and run and when they ran, they scooted off to another site where an even larger ambush was prepared.
