An excellent book is: Secret Missions of the Civil War by Philip Van Doren Stern 1987, publisher is Wings Books, New York.

It has "First hand accounts by men and women who risked their lives in underground activities for the North and the South."

I get most of my books from the Half Price Book Store. Every payday before I go home, I go into this store.

Who was it that said something about, "When I have a little money, I buy books. If there is any money left, I buy food."

Dear LtKepper;

I would also go onto the Internet search engine; and type in:

www.e-history.com

Then, use their search engine within the web based "Official Records of the Rebellion" ; and enter "spy"; "spies"; and any other key words you wish to search.

Most spies were civilian however, some were soldiers in disguises. Cases where spies wore the enemy's unform(s) as to gain information.

Example:
O.R.-- SERIES I--VOLUME 2 [S# 2] -- CHAPTER IX.
CORRESPONDENCE, ORDERS, AND RETURNS RELATING TO OPERATIONS IN MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA, AND WEST VIRGINIA FROM APRIL 16 TO JULY 31, 1861.
CONFEDERATE CORRESPONDENCE, ETC.--#5
[excerpt]
About two hundred and fifty of the Pocahontas militia have been mustered into service. Eighty of them are now organized as spies and guides, and are watching closely all of the mountain roads, passes, and paths in the direction of the enemy. Captain Marye's battery probably arrived at Huntersville to-day, and will join Colonel Lee without delay.
(Pocahontas militia are the Native Amercian Indian Tribe located in the vicinity of Carmel Church/Bowling Green, VA).

O.R.-- SERIES I--VOLUME 2 [S# 2] -- CHAPTER IX.
CORRESPONDENCE, ORDERS, AND RETURNS RELATING TO OPERATIONS IN MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA, AND WEST VIRGINIA FROM APRIL 16 TO JULY 31, 1861.
UNION CORRESPONDENCE, ETC.--#4
Lest a reconnaissance should draw the enemy in force from Bunker Hill in time to strengthen the body between this and Martinsburg, the general desires the information obtained as secretly as possible, employing spies to go into Virginia and testing the fords at night, by intelligent persons, swimming, &c. He designs to cross with a force which will render success certain. Other information may be obtained in seeking for that desired, which may tend to change this plan or to mature it, and therefore the general desires the officers not to confine themselves to this. As soon as possible, after sufficient information is obtained, the general wishes Captains Newton and Simpson to report to him. He only awaits the arrival of harness for Perkins' battery and this information to act.
[end of excerpts]

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf
