Default I need help from experts

James W Dougherty (war).jpg

The attached pic of an infanty soldier is in our family but we have no information really about his service. Neither are we sure who he is, but if we could get some info on possible service attachment that would help. The family was in Louisville around the start of the war. Thanks for any information any of you can provide based on this photo.

Well the uniform isn't US standard. I thought at first that it was a US soldier wearing French gear but upon further looking I'm inclined to think British Army or militia. The belt buckle is British. The weapon isn't your standard M1861 it looks more like a 2 band P1858 but I can't be sure.

Good Luck!

The hat looks sort of, but not much (note the tassle), like an iron Brigade hat, but that uniform is a bit too much.

Dear Maukaman;

May I inquire if you have contacted the American National Archives-Military Portrait Section?

And, may I inquire if you have sent the photograph to the British Military Archives; for a potential identification?

I would also consider, that the gentleman may have been a veteran and wore said uniform for a portrait anywhere in between the countries.
Since I am unable to read the medalions as well as Johan_Steele; perhaps they can be identified by British military and or American Archivists.

Was there a stamp or indentification of where the studio was where he posed? Sometimes that can be of assistance.

American/US Textile Museum may be of assistance as well.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf
