I have heard that President Nixon had to shave twice a day as well.
Nixon's great grandfather I believe; George Nixon is buried at Gettysburg; and from a Quaker background.
I have known men to whom had to shave twice a day as their beards seemingly grew fast. So, I would think it is possible.
I would also like to add, that shaving for men had changed through the course of time. During the Civil War the straight razor was normal; to which took time. The Civil War regulations for men in the Union Army; was that men could wear their beards as long as they wished but, must be neatly trimmed. Hair worn short (Something General Custer should have been cited for)--[Reference 1861 Revised Regulations of the US Army- pg 495-Article LI- Uniforms - Section -1634]
Just some thoughts.

Custer, as you know, was not the prettiest of generals. His long hair was probably helpful in cushioning the view? I saw Nixon on tv many times from 1960 onward. He had a very dark beard which he kept closely shaved, which, since it was black, was quite obvious.

I do belive General G. A. Custer was much more 'pretty' then General "Killcavalry" Kilpatrick -- The man is scary looking--[does the shiver shake]--but, not really knowing how loving he could be to a lady or such--looks don't make the man -- in my opinion. Same goes for women.

I remember back in a College Hist class I took, taking a good look at the debates between Nixon and Kennedy. Numerous citizens were polled as to whom they thought "won" the debate. Those who said they watched it on TV all went for Kennedy, but those who listened on the radio were more likely to choose Nixon. The argument was that the appearance of a younger looking Kennedy as opposed to the pasty looking old Nixon was a factor. Since then the POTUS has had a staff just to deal with where are all the cameras going to be, where will the Pres enter the room etc. Looks do matter.
Who do you think had the best looking facial hair during the war? I'd have to say that John B. Gordon gets my vote. That goat tee and his piercing stare....he just looks like one mean SOB.
