At the risk of sounding corny, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Also....please try to remember the fallen on Monday.

I don't think this sounds corny at all. In fact, I'm ashamed I didn't think to make a similar post. I often feel some guilt that I never served. Thank you, to all of you who have.
Last week my wife and I visited the WWI museum in KC MO. It is spectaular, if you can you should go there. The enterance is a glass brdge over a field of poppies representing the fallen. As we were leaving a WWII vet and his wife were coming in. It struck me that here were living vterans of two of the last century's wars standing on a memorial to the fallen of a third. I threw him and them a salute. He said "thank you." My eyes git a little misty. I don't think that I will ever forget that visit, to me it represented the continuing brotherhood of those who have seen the elephant.
I would like to extend that salute to all my fellow veterans living and gone.
Y'all have a great week end.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Dolphins guard thy infant slumbers,
Davy Jones thy sandman be,
For thy father's gone ahunting,
In the jungles of the sea
Moonless nights and sunless days
Doth he stalk the watery ways
Where the pale anemone
Decks the gardens of the sea,
Where the coral's lacy fan
Waves in courts unmarred by man
Where the shark and dolphin play
There thy father hunts his prey,
Where the great whales rise and blow,
There thy father tracks his foe,
With periscope for magic eye
To watch the ships go swiftly by,
With darker magic tuned to hear
The pulse of foeman drawing near.
He'll come home to thee at last,
Broom triumphant at the mast
Dolphins guard thy infant slumbers,
Davy Jones thy sandman be,
Child of war thy father's hunting
In the jungles of the sea.
Lt. Harold Todd, an officer on the USS LAGARTO SS-371,
wrote this for his child's second birthday.
LAGARTO was lost in May 1945. Published in the book "Submarine Commander" page 203.

A Sailor's Poem
Run silent, run deep
For freedom we fought to keep
How we spent so many days
Beneath the shimmering waves
A terrible foe we fought
And gave our lives; and freedom bought
Now our souls forever lie
Restlessly beneath the waves
So silent now, so deep
For it is not enough for you to weep
For we shall not have died in vain
Lest you forget for what we gave
We gave our lives, freedom to save
For if you forget our deeds
Then we shall never sleep
Though we lie so silent, so deep.

As we do every Memorial weekend we will visit the graves of relatives. One is my great grandfather's, Sergeant Henry W. Tisdale, Company I, 35th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865, which is written on the family stone in Highland Cemetery in Norwood, MA. His diary can be read in full at www.civilwardiary.net

Always remember our vets for their sacrifices! My late father was a WW2,Korean War ,Vietnam Vet who was in the 101st Airborne. Memorial day to me is very special!
Today (May 25), I went to a memorial service for the USS San Francisco (CA-38). She was shot to pieces during one of the night battles off of Guadacanal. Along with other ships of her squadron, she turned back a Japanese relief force including one battleship. Casualties among the Allies were heavy but it saved the marines who had landed on Guadacanal and were holding Henderson Field. It gave me an opportunity to shake hands with one of the sailors.
I'd like to thank all the veterans including those who are at this board. This means you Rivrrat, Neil and Johan (and anyone else whom I've overlooked).
