Default A Name link to Civil War Era

AS we all know the greatest boxer of the 20th century was Muhammad Ali. His was originally named after his father and changed his name after his conversion to *****. His father was named for a great Kentuckian who was an abolitionist, one of the founders of the Republican Party, and who lost the vote to be Lincoln's first Vice President in 1860.

Yes, a man named "Cassius Marcellus Clay"...

I thought this was an interesting link back to the civil war era....

Could swear I responded to this earlier. But. Cassius Clay never ran up against Rocky Marciano. The "greatest"? Hardly.

He was Cassius Clay when he shined in the Olympics, but as Mohammed Ali, he was all talk. You can say he was the greatest for a decade, but you really can't exactly say he was the century's greatest. For that, you'd have to put him against some who were really great. Marciano was just one of them.

Or Joe Louis or Jack Dempsey. And Ali lost to, among others, the forgettable Leon Spinks.

To Ole and Scribe:

Rocky Marciano was not the Greatest but Ali did say once he would have been the toughest for him to beat.

As we know boxing has character and honesty issues among the Gods that ran boxing.

Rocky Mariano never boxed the best in his day the promoters always gave him set up fights that he would win easily. They made more money with him as champ then with any other boxer of the day.

The promoters did the same for Ali when he was really to old to fight and gave him gravy fights that he could win even at his advance age for a boxer. A note when Ali was younger he did fight the best fighters of his day like Foreman and Frasier.

Remember, our government cheated Ali of out some of his best boxing years...

Ali long career did cheated Norton and Shavers of spotlight.

Leave it to 5fish to throw a soggy blanket over the fire!

Ali was a very skilled pugilist. But I'll still maintain that he wasn't the greatest of the century. Drag down the Rock all you want, he remains as one of the few who retired undefeated.

Well, I guess it is.

Is it obscene, derogatory, profane, flaming, abusive, insulting?

I think not. In fact I am very surprised that this word is prohibited, as according to the rules and etiquette, " We take a very serious view of offensive and vulgar messages -- especially those aimed at sexual orientation, gender, race, color, religious views, national origin, or disability."

By the same virture one would expect that non-judgemental mentions of religious views would not be proscribed. You can't diss it, neither can you even mention it! But here we are. Witch trials, anyone?
