Default American NCO Stripes

As I have just realised my promotion to Corporal is almost due, this would seem an apt time to ask this question. Civil War period stripes are in the form of a V. 20th century to present day American NCO's have inverted chevron type stripes. When and why did they change?

Chevrons were rotated and made smaller in 1902. The US Army standardized the uniform and did away with branch specific chevrons such as blue for infantry, Red for Arty etc. Instead all ranks became standard on the kakhi uniform and branch was designated by hat and collar device.

USMC chevrons however have been point up since before the Civil War.

Borderruffian,

Thanks for the information.

Twenty years in the US Army and never knew that.

Again, Thanks.
