Vicksburg National Battlefield Park has the USS Cairo (pronounced Kay-ro there unlike the rest of the world that pronounces it as Kai-ro) on display.

I visited the Cairo last year. It is well worth a visit if you can make it. It is part of the Vicksburg Natl Park. They have the bell on display and it is said that when they raised it up air that has been trapped since 1863 was let loose. Kinda neat I thought.

The NPS at Vicksburg pronounces it care-o. I still think it's kay-ro.

Ole, I've been told many times: "Son, Cairo's in Egypt. KAY ROW's in Illinois."

First time I heard it pronounced as "Kay-ro" was from Ed Bearss.

BTW, Ohioans say "May-die-na" for Medina. Out here in the Left Coast we say "May-dee-na." That's the correct Italian pronounciation. BTW, it's actually arabic for walled city.

Here in flyover country I passed through the place just once and never dared get out of the car to ask a native how it was pronounced locally. Never was more glad than there to see a place in the rear-view mirror.
