Civil War "Manuals" and tid bits Dear List Members,
I am not sure if this has been discussed or not however, I thought I would share a smidge of what I believe to be interesting facts.
Hardee's Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics were written in 1852. The same Hardee went to the Confederate side.
In the period of the Mexican War, Secretary of War at the time was Jeff Davis. He would become the President of the Confederate States. As Secretary of War, he oversaw the writing and policies of the US Army Manual, to include Art. of War. (This would explain Jeff Davis' need to micro-manage the Conf. military and the knowledge of the behavior of Union military).
Gibbon's Artillerist Manual was published in 1859.
Casey's US Infantry Tactics was published in 1862 making small changes to Hardee's Rifle & Light Infantry Tactics manual.
McClellan's Bayonet Drill was published in 1862.
Cooke's Cavalry Tactics were published in 1862.
Military Administration manuals used:
1. Kautz Customs of Service for Non Commissioned officers and soldiers.
2. Kautz Customs of Service for Officers
3. US Army Regulations of 1861
Volunteers had a different set of manuals:
1. Baxter's Instruction for Volunteers (1861)
2. Steffen's Digest of US Tactics
3. Duffield's Camp, Garrison & Guard Duty.
If there are more --I just haven't found them of yet. However, I thought it was interesting to know.
Sincerely,
M. E. Wolf |
