Well sir, since you seem like such a nice guy, I'll let you in on a little known secret. I submit for your consideration .....

On August 11, 1862 Captain William C. Quantill captured Independence, Missouri. In this raid he captured a fine brown horse, which he gave the name of Charley, his own given name. He rode Charley thoroughout the war and legend has it, on the day he died, Charley was injured while being shod, and Quantrill said it was a bad omen. I reckon it was, for him.

Dear Blue Raider,

I will accept "Charley" as well, being connected to Captain William C. Quantrill.

As an equestrian -- it is an omen when it has anything to do with one's horse getting injured--especially when it comes to horse shoes; yet-- if you believe myths or not -- some do believe and some don't.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully,
M. E. Wolf

It seems I know a little bit about the obscure ones. I submit for your consideration .....

One of the boys that was Missouri with Colonel Quantrill on his fateful journey through Kentucky was a Sergeant John Ross. He had a horse named after the steamboat, Sam Getty.

Dear Blue Raider,

I submit to you -- to consider, that names of horses are very obscured, as they were for most--just 'a horse.' So many horses came through military service and perished. You might find there are 20 horses named Billy but, the difficulty is--linking them to their owner/rider.

I wished that there was more listing information as to who was joined with who-as far as horses and riders go. Further, some names of horses changed, when the horse belonging to an officer/General would be free and running into enemy lines and captured--then the horse's name would be named after the officer who lost their mount. So, its a mixer per se. Plus, for an example, Colonel Gamble's Gettysburg Brigade, there were 24 horses lost--Artillery lost lots of teams. At least, in my mind--they are on the honor rolls for equines in 'Heaven.'

Just some thoughts--please continue in your endeavors!

Warm regards,
M. E. Wolf
