Default Who is the American Biggles?

My young nephew has started reading some of my old Biggles books, and I thought the Board might be a good place to ask the question.
Biggles may well be unknown to most of you, but he is a fictional character who appeared in dozens of books. The books were written by Captain W.E Johns who was a First World War pilot. Second Lieutenant (later Captain) James Bigglesworth first featured in short stories as a fighter pilot, flying his Sopwith Camel over the trenches. Between the wars, he got into many adventures and scrapes fighting bad guys, spys and treasure hunting. All of the stories were based around aviation, as with his close pals Algy and Ginger, he travelled the world writing wrongs. When World War Two started, Biggles became a Squadron Leader commanding a special operations unit. Again he travelled the world, this time fighting Nazis and Japanese in his Spitfire. When the war was over, Biggles was still not finished. He became Inspector Bigglesworth of the Special Air Police. Again he fought bad guys, smugglers and spys. His arch enemy was East German Erich von Stahlein. By this time he must have been very old, but that is conveniently overlooked in the books.
But which fictional character would be the American equivalent?

Never read any of his. Became aware of the name not all that long ago. But ask me about Steve Canyon or Terry and the Pirates. But they weren't of the same genre.
