Default Another thing I learned from The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

was why the Confederates lost the Battle of Glorietta Pass. One fellow in a saloon watches a passing Confederate column. He says:

"Look, see the one sitting in the wagon with the white beard? General Sibley, he looks dead."
The lesson learned? Use only living, viable people to lead your men into battle.

Yep, all accounts say he was a heavy drinker. At Valverde, he had a bout with "colic" and confined himself to his ambulance. His troops nicknamed him "the Walking Whiskey Keg".
