I was just curious- how many of you have met Edwin Bearss? What kinds of great information did you get from the experience? Of all of the historians I have ever heard, he is the most inspirational historical orator I have even seen, and I just wanted to hear more.

I've heard him speak thrice. The first time was at a co-meeting involving the San Francisco Civil War Round Table, Peninsula Civil War Round Table, Sacramento Civil War Round Table, South Bay Civil War Round Table and a few others. He spoke about Gettysburg. The second time was at Spotsylvania Court House (Mule Shoe area) when he was leading a tour group from Baltimore Civil War Round Table. I thought it rude so I didn't really stick around. The third time was at the Annual West Coast Civil War Conference where he spoke on the Kay-Ro (Cairo). I had him autograph every single one of my books that he wrote or provided a forward to.
Bearss has energy that puts younger men to shame. His power of recall is amazing as he recites a unit, its history, its leader and his history and then goes on to tell what he did in that battle. An Ed Bearss tour is not to be missed.
I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Mr. Bearss back in 1990 on a walking tour of Appomattox. Mr. Chris Caulkins, a guide there was also giving plenty of info on the chronological events that happened from April 7th to the 10th.
Although the info I received from Mr. Bearss was no different than from any other Historian, it was the way he delivered it to me was what I remember. There was a lot of emotion behind it and that made the lecture alive.
I had the opportunity to videotape it and I just transferred it to DVD. Although it was done in 1990, the video was still great.
Looked at your home page Rad. Very nice layout, with artistically composed photos of Gettysburg. Especially liked the photo of the monument to the Irish Brigade, with the Wolfhound lying at rest at the base, ever vigilant, protecting his masters.
Will you be posting the video of your conversation with Ed Bearss? Or the link? Thx.
Terry

Yeah. Post your video or it didn't happen. Kidding. I believe you, but for we peons on the West (wasted) Coast and are very remote from those battlefields, please post it.
What a pleasure to view your pictures and homepage!
Love your above ground quote and your don't matter one too!
Thanks for sharing,

Had the pleasure of listening to and dining with Ed Bearrs about 15 years ago. Of course, he was a bit more animated than than he is now.
There are those who pick on pieces of his scholarship but to me, his animated presentation just brings every second alive. I'm not sure that I actually took a breath during the 45 minutes he talked.
Just to share a bit that has always tickled me: If you want to know which horse Grant was riding during which day in the Vicksburg Campaign, Ed Bearrs can point you to the spot where the horse eliminated. And at what time.

Thanks to you all for answering my post- I'm going to be moving to Baltimore in a few months, and I don't think it will be all that difficult meeting him sometime while I am there. I'm just hoping he keeps doing it after I get there....!
