Default Happy 199th Abe

Though you doubted that we would, we do remember you.

We also thank you for preserving our "nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

And that you did "save our country" and "preserve ... the last best hope of earth."

Blow out the candles and cut the cake.

Y'know. The man had some warts. And many shortcomings as we see it. But there, for one, brief, shining moment, was the right man at the right time. George Washington was there to set the fledgling nation on a course. We had a couple three more to stay that course. And, down the pike a bit, we had a Lincoln. Everyone after that seems insignificant.

If that sounds like idolatry, it isn't. But it is a recognition that, at the time, this nation had a man in charge of it who somehow maintained an idea that a nation, any nation, so dedicated, could long endure. And, for that, we might recognize the bumpkin's contribution.

Thumbs down

Happy 199th & RIP President Lincoln.

Your existence was most profound and your absence from history would have led to a very different and diminished USA and world.

Without Abe, there wouldn't be Town Cars or Navigators and the such! Vroom!

On his birthday, 143 years after his death, 55% of white (Democrat) males have voted to a (half) Black man for President of the United States.

I wonder if he could have imagined that. I'd think not, but if he had known this was a goofy looking Illinois lawyer with only 2 years experience in the US congress, he might have given the guy a ghost of a chance.
