In a discussion about the number of books written about Gettysburg, I find that an average of ~three books etc. per month have been written about Grant since his death (4242) and the same (~3) for Gettysburg (5000 +).
In discussing the lack of books about the war in the west at another site. The citation above listed “Musical scores” as part of the “Grant Bibliography.”
I was intrigued by the mention of “Musical Scores.” I wondered what they sounded like? Can you imagine the cast?
Foster Brooks as Ulysses?
Anthony Perkins as Sherman?
Danny Devito as Sheridan?
Don Rickles as Meade?
David Hyde Pierce as Rawlins?
Willy Nelson as Lee?
Jack Elam as Custer?
Lee J. Cobb as Rosekrans?
Leonardo DiCaprio as McPherson?
Robert Mitchum as J. B. Hood?
Gabby Hayes as Richard Ewell?
Clint Eastwood as Jackson?
I'm going to see Appomattox - especially since I can get free tickets.
BTW, I'd still like to see Robin Williams as Grant. He'll have to play a (serious) character role though.
Williams could do it. He did full serious in "Awakenings" then there was "24 hour photo" and "insomnia", just give him a good beard and hair.
Aside: ( No one who has never seen "The Spanish Prisoner" would believe that Steve Martin could play a serious, in fact, seriously villainous character.)

I just can't wait to hear the lyrics for Appomattox.
...
Lee enters the McLean house with his bright clean Dress Uniform:
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
It's amazing how pretty I be,
What a pity,
That I gotta give up my ar-my.
I feel charming,
Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real.
See the pretty man in that mirror there:
Who can that attractive man be?
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty sash,
Such a pretty sword,
Such a pretty me!
Grant (the slob) enters:
I'm so muddy,
Oh so muddy,
And from riding my butt is so sore,
And so buddy,
Let's sit down and try to end this war.
I'm so thirsty,
Oh so thirsty,
To be thirsty's the worst thing to be
Yes I'm thirsty,
Who is gonna get a drink for me?
Where is little Phil of the cavalry?
Let us send him out for some beer,
And a little schnapps,
And a little rye,
And a little gin,
And a bit of cheer!
????

I would maybe put Eastwood in as Sherman, and I don't know if I really see a spot for Tony Perkins. He and David Hyde Pierce don't really have that rugged kick-a** image of a fighting general.
I might put Decaprio in as Custer. I can't see Jack Elam as a dashing cavalry officer, but that's just MO. I mean, how could you tell he was talking to you, even if he was looking right at you? There could be a disastrous foul-up in communications/orders/directions.??
