Okra's one of those regional foods that probably didn't have any firmer foothold in Yankeedom then than it does now.

I've always loved it. Used to pick the okra out of the Campbell's Chicken Gumbo Soup and eat it first. Imagine my joy when they opened a Golden Corral in my town... with fried okra on the buffet!!

When I was growing up, we had some neighbors from the South who grew okra in their garden. I loved the blossoms, which look like hibiscus or hollyhocks. Did not pick them though!!

Yep the stuff grows in Virginia and North Carolina as well. Okra is like the yankees who moved in. We don't brag much about 'em. Just try to go on with life.

Kudzu, unlike some weeds is completely eatable from its leaves to its roots. Makes a great salad!

Did you mean to say, "Did the north have okra" or "Oprah"?

Richard:
Does that mean that "greens" will be not collard, but kudsu?

30th:
Opry is definitely suth'n. There is no nuth'n equivalent.

Well, as far as greens go, collard are good. Kudzu leaves make a good salad if you find the ones that are not too close to the road. You need to avoid the ones that have been sprayed with weed killer. The nice and clean ones do have a different taste than other "greens" but still very good. There is a patch of Kudzu just about 5 miles from my house here in central Indiana. It is on a major highway so I am not going to bother with them.
