I have seen hundreds of pictures of Grant. I have never seen one in which he was packin". That certainly doesn't mean he didn't; but if he did, he never wore one in a picture. Seems to me, if he had a favorite piece, he might have worn it at least once. Do you all know about this website? www.generalsandbrevets.com It's pretty cool. Hope it helps.

My dear mother:- I have come safely through two more terrible engagements with the enemy, that at South Mountain and the great battle of yesterday (Antietam). Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj. Rufus Dawes, 6th Wisconsin Volunteers
Never that I've ever read about. I'm not sure that he even wore a sword.

In their little conversation at Appomattox, Grant apologized to Lee for not wearing a sword, as well as his generally rumpled dress, saying his personal baggage had gone astray. In a photo of Grant standing with a horse, you can see saddle holsters, but not what they contained, if anything.
There's an early war picture of Grant all gussied up with sash, sword in hand, peacock feather in his Hardee hat but I don't recall a pistol.
A sword maybe if staged photos. I can't recall any mention of his wearing any sidearm.
By the way, see my post on the "Ulysses S. Grant Homepage".
