I have seen hundreds of pictures of Grant. I have never seen one in which he was packin". That certainly doesn't mean he didn't; but if he did, he never wore one in a picture. Seems to me, if he had a favorite piece, he might have worn it at least once. Do you all know about this website? www.generalsandbrevets.com It's pretty cool. Hope it helps.

Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj. Never that I've ever read about. I'm not sure that he even wore a sword.

In their little conversation at Appomattox, Grant apologized to Lee for not wearing a sword, as well as his generally rumpled dress, saying his personal baggage had gone astray. In a photo of Grant standing with a horse, you can see saddle holsters, but not what they contained, if anything.
