The legal blog The Volokh Conspiracy tells the story of a South Carolinian's efforts to enforce a restrictive covenant banning the sale or lease of his property to members of "the Yankee race" or people with the last name "Sherman".
Luckily, my last name isn't Sherman. Are New Yawkers "Yankees"?
I've been trying to get a couple of those links to open, but not having much luck yet. I'll try again tomorrow. I'd really like to read the "No Yankees Covenant".

I checked the links and they seem to work. To give you another option, here's the link to the underlying news article, in the Island Packet (apparently based in the Beaufort-Hilton Head area):
On the one hand, I don't see how you could convince a court that "Yankees" constitute a "race".
On the other hand, racially restrictive covenants have been held to be unconstitutional, on the grounds that they would utilize the powers of the state (via the courts) to enforce an unconstitutional policy (racial discrimination BY the state).
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this case. Probably it (the restrictive covenant) will be held null and void, on the grounds that he is attempting use the courts to enforce racial discrimination: even though it's dubious who the members of that alleged "race" would be.
I remember when this fella made the big fuss; would have been in the mid to late 90's when I was still living in SC... I remember seeing an interview w/ the guy. Calling him a touch odd would be... very generous.

Thanks ET, I was able to open the second link you provided.

Wow. I guess "Pops" Ingram was serious about the covenants. He's even leaving for Costa Rica. Hope they don't have any transplanted Yankees there.

You know, though, it just occurred to me that Mr. Ingram may have been referring to transplanted New Yorkers. (No offense ET). When I lived in south Florida for two years in the '80s I was always being tail-gated or cut-off by dudes who used their middle fingers a lot, and often yelled this: "your mutha!", as they flew around me. I wasn't even the one weaving in and out of lanes, speeding, etc. I was just driving in a straight line for cryin' out loud. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a thing against New Yorkers. I had a problem with those particular guys though, who sounded as if they hailed from New York, Jersey, or nearby. See, I'm a hoosier and we're all polite drivers, with manners, and such. So, instead of getting into a shouting match with these guys down in Florida, I'd mind my own business, slow down, let them in ahead of me, then follow them at a distance til they got where they were going. Then when they parked their car,I'd get out of mine and shoot them.

No offence taken, William! It's funny, but I don't think of myself as a Yankee. When I saw "the Yankee Race", the first thing I thought of was descendents of the Mayflower and the like -- New England bluebloods -- and that I ain't!
P.S.: For any law enforcement personnel in Broward or Palm Beach Counties who may have been on duty between 11/1979 and 10/1981, and who might be members or lurkers on this board....I'm joking.
