I thought I'd start a thread for our international members who might want to chat about the World Cup.
Having been stationed in the UK from 1986-1994, I tend to support the English and Irish teams.
This begs the question; if the CSA won the WBTS and gained independence, would there have been a Team CSA at the tournment?

I probably don't qualify as an international member, but I watched most of the US vs. Italy game yesterday. Thought the US put up a real good effort, particularly being short-handed for almost the entire second half of the game.
I guess the US has to beat Ghana now and root like crazy for the Azzuri to beat the Czechs.
I know that Scotland has had teams in the World Cup in the past, so I assume the CSA would have been eligible to enter a team if they had been able to maintain their independence. I wonder how many players on the current US team hail from states that were part of the Confederacy.
Yah watched The USA play Italy with only 9 people!!!!! I bet that Italian player who scored for the USA felt bad. Yah and Brazil beat Australlia. I expect Germany (me major heritage) will do good again this year.
One of the few I participate in. See how many beers you can drink before you hurl. A sport of kings!
Ole

Sadly, the USA fell to Ghana 2-1. I'm pulling for England now.

Ahhhh. A World Cup in which little seemed to go right for the Americans. Mistakes, star players not playing up to snuff, questionable strategies, even more questionable referree calls. Hard to advance that way. Give Ghana credit though, they played very well and did what needed to be done to go on. They had beaten a Czech side which had completely dominated the US in our first game. We played Italy extremely well, but lost out two top defenders to red cards (expulsion & suspension from the Ghana game.) Ah well, next time. In the meantime, lots of teams to root for, starting with my favs- Mexico. But Netherlands, Ecuador, and Ghana are favorites of mine as well. And for beautiful play there is the new and exciting German squad, and regulars Brazil, Argentina, Spain, & Italy.

France has surprisingly just knocked off the favorites Brazil- and even played better than the classy Brazilians. Now it's down to a resurgent Germany vs a sound if wussy Italy; and France with its best game under its belt vs a hard charging but exhausted Portugal. Looks like it might be renewed battling along the Western Front.....
