Default "Soldiering-The Civil War Dairy Of Rice Bull"-Top Ten CW Book !

I just finished this paperback that I bought on Ebay for about 8 bucks. It provides such great detail !!! on his 3-4 years with the Union- Chancellorsville, Atlanta Campaign, Georgia and the Carolinas. You actually feel you are there- His notes and letters(which formed the basis) are meticulous. The detail amazing. The description of the day to day circumstances are outstanding and true. He repeatedly called the Rebs "Johnnies"- in fact one particular Johnnie probably saved his life after he was severly wounded and taken prisoner after Chancer and eventually exchanged. This book was highly rated by LA Times and CW Times Illustrated. Published in 1977.

Default For memoirs or published journals or diaries by the soldiers...

Rice Bull's offering is definitely one of the classics of the war but for me, John Worsham's, "One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry" also deserves a spot among the top books. It's personal for me because it's the book that fired up my enthusiasm for first hand accounts by Civil War veterans. Sam Watkin's "Company Aytch" is also up there as is Wyman White's Diary.
