Default The "Texans" form of "Dixie"

"The Land of Texas"

Texas is the land for me;
On a winter morning the wind blows free;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
In Texas land, where I was born in,
Early one fine summer morning;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

Chorus

In the happy land of Texas, hurrah, hurrah!
In Texas land we'll take our stand,
And fight and die for Texas land,
Hurrah, hurrah! hurrah for the boys of Texas!

Texas land is the land for Cotton,
Piney hills or sandy bottom;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
Here the finest corn we raise;
With oats, wheat, barley, peas, and maize;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

Here we have all sorts of game,
The numerous kinds I will not name;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
The beasts of the field and birds of the air
Are found in Texas everywhere
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

Here the Southern sun doth shine,
Which makes all nature look sublime;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
O, Texas land is the land forever,
Up the hill or down the river;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

Here the men grow stout and steady,
Ever brave and always ready;
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
Here we have the finest ladies,
Girls as sweet and pretty as daises,
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

Texas is my home by birth-
And shall be until the day of death-
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!
When I fall, then will I cry,
"Farewell, Texas! let me die-
Away, boys, away down South in Texas!

On the subject of Texas I tend to agree with Mark Twain.

Doug,

What did Mr. Twain think about Texas?

"If I owned a house in Hell and a farm in Texas, I would sell the farm and go home."

I'm sorry you apparently have had a bad experience in Texas, Doug. Mark Twain's remark is, of course, insulting, but it would be hellish if everybody did like Texas and wanted to move in. I hope you have made and will make visits that are pleasant. Texas is definitely not bland. There is a strong state pride. I like the place.

Definitely not bland. I indead have had a bad experience in Texas. I don't blame Texas or all Texans for that. I just think that from time to time that strong state pride needs to be tempered by other opinions.

Well put. That was my opinion when I moved here. It also seemed Texans had no sense of humor about themselves (another discussion topic). I've come to appreciate that the pride is better than worrying about what the rest of the country or the rest of the world thinks, although 100% either way is not wise.

Sockknitter, there's a saying down here; "Never ask a man where he's from. If he's from Texas he'll say so, if he's not there's no need to embarass him."

And yes, that is a joke at our expense. It's poking fun at our over inflated ego and state pride. You have probably noticed we aren't short on either.

My husband said to a co-worker once, "Hey, Jose. Remember the Alamo?"

Jose replied, "Si, Pancho (Frank), we remember the Alamo, it's San Jacinto we try to forget."

Texas has a very rich and diverse history. Ya just gotta love this state.

Regards,
Rose

If I were going to relocate to another State, Texas would probably be the one, if I had a choice. I have probably spent over a year of my life in Texas, from a few days to a few months at the time. The close calls that I had were because of my being where I didn't belong. A good steak is easy to find, almost anywhere, and reasonably priced. I like West Texas best, the faint hearted don't seem to last long there.

I've only visited a very small portion of Texas, but I do know that if I had to relocate from my beloved Alabama, Texas is where I'd go! Of course, it helps that I have family in Tyler and Flint!
