Tallassee, Ala. Historical Building Burns Today in Tallassee, Alabama, the old Cotton Warehouse built in the 1880's burned to the ground in an apparent "electrical fire." This building is located very close to the old Tallassee Confederate Armory which produced Enfield type carbines for the CS Army in 1865. Fortunately, the Arsenal wasn't harmed in the fire but this portion of Tallassee's historical district was a total loss.
The Cotton warehouse was built with 400-plus year old heart pine. The building had been restored by the local Historical Society and was currently in use as a business. Television coverage stated the local Historical Society will utilize this now empty space, formerly occupied by the Cotton Warehouse, as a expansion of the future Confederate Museum which will include the Historic Confederate Tallassee Arsenal. The old Arsenal building, I believe, was built in the 1840's.
I heard the Fire Alarm of the City of Tallassee from my farm, located approximately 17 miles from the scene. I'll post info which comes available regarding the Tallassee Confederate Arsenal's future plans, to those of you who might be interested.
