Default Sharing Mosby's Birthday

Sharing Mosby's birthday
Loudoun Times-Mirror, VA -
Staff
People born on Dec. 25 complain they are
short-changed in the gift department. Those born Feb.
29 get to celebrate only every four years.
But what about those people sharing a less auspicious
birth date, such as those sharing the Dec. 6 birthday
of John Singleton Mosby, the Gray Ghost, the charming
cavalier of the Confederacy who never found a trap he
couldn't spring?
Do these people take pride in sharing this day? Do
they care one way or the other? Do they sense his
presence, hear the echoes of his galloping horse?

Thea,
Thank you for your post on John S. Mosby. He is the closest thing I have to an Idol. I grew up in his section of the country (Mosby's Confederacy), and take pride in him never formaly surrendering to the yankees. I have gone to the little hamlet of Marshall, Va. and stood at the spot where he disbanded his command. I have trod over much of the ground he sprang many of his raids. I have lived in and around such places as: Fairfax, Warrenton, Middleburg, Oakton, Herndon, Leesburg, Berryville and Front Royal.....all in Virginia, and all part of Mosby's Confederacy. I have heard many of the local stories told about the man and his exploits, some told by actual decendants of those who experienced firsthand, those events.

I have sensed his presence at some of those places and heard those echoes of his galloping horse. I have stood at his grave site, in Warrenton, Va., and paid homage to the man who is a legend in the Valley of the Shenandoah.

Thank you for sharing this, Thea.

With warm Regards,
SgtCSA

Mosby was, indeed, a charismatic and heroic figure.

Apparently an uncomplicated man, he put his all on his side, and did so without the depredations of his Missouri and Tennessee counterparts. From what I understand (it's been years since I read the book), he plagued the bejeezus out of Union soldiers and only Union soldiers. He singularly deserves his honors.

Ole
