Default Many Blacks Take Pride In South

Many blacks take pride in Southern roots
Times Picayune, LA -

David Jansson, an assistant professor in geography at
Vassar College, has written extensively on the
complexities of Southern identity. In a study
comparing the attitudes of blacks in Lynchburg, Va.,
with those of members of the pro-secession League of
the South, he found striking similarities - affinity
for Confederate symbols aside.

Quite true. Recently, about six weeks after Katrina passed through, I was at Picayune guarding a FEMA/ Red Cross site. A police team from a sister state was preparing to depart. Just before their departure, one of the officers took from their travel/ operations trailer a flag, the Confederate battle flag, and waved the 2X3' banner. From the several hundred people standing in line there was a cry, then applause. There were approximately as many blacks as whites, and from my position close to the flag waver, Both blacks and whites were applauding. There were cries of "Ya'll stay here, and send the Yankees home!" But then this was nearly as far South as one can go. In pre-war times there are stories of slaves in Nawlins wealthy enough to own their own slaves to do the work for them..... Southern Culture is more complex than most people realize.

Olerebel,

Your words are very true. The south is a very complex culture, indeed. Good comment & welcome to the board!
