As of this morning, Hurricane Rita is expext to make landfall in and around the Galveston area sometime Saturday morning (depending on who you listen to).
1.2 million are evacuating an area from Corpus Christi to Beaumont.
San Antonio is taking in evacuees from the coast. We still have 3000 Katrina evacuees.
This storm has already passed Katrina in intensity.
San Antonio will most likely have a windy and rainy day but I can't say the same for the Houston/Galveston area. They are about to get smacked with about as much energy as the 1900 hurricane that leveled Galveston and killed 6000 to 8000.
There is even concern that the outermost rain bands could cause renewed flooding in New Orleans.
Please keep those along the Texas Gulf Coast on prayer.

Hope you and everybody you know get through Rita in good shape, F.S. I'm in the Dallas area. We're supposed to be getting winds from 40 to 80 miles an hour by Saturday but I don't always bet high amounts on forecasters' accuracy. My husband wants to move our vehicles from our driveway into the street because he's worried about trees falling on them in the driveway. But I worry about heavy rains maybe overpowering the storm sewer capacity and rising water getting into the car; our driveway is about 4' higher than the street. But what, me worry? I will maybe believe all these dire forecasts when I see what really happens.
I did hear on the radio that it's taking people 12 hours+ to get from Houston to places it normally takes 3 hours, and that Houston gas stations are out of gas.
I heard this morning that you could not buy gas east of Columbus, on I-10.
If the latest NOAA map is to be believed, San Antonio is now just outside the "cone of probability" and the storm should be a tropical storm around your location, socknitter.
As an act of revenge, folks will be tossing back 'ritas at the Riverwalk when this is over.
Late word, I-10 East is closed. All lanes are westbound.
Also heard an unconfirmed report that Houston has ordered an mandatory evacuation (I have relatives at Pasadena and Deer Park, where the refineries are).

I think the majority of Texans are above all of that squabble.
Unless its the UT-A&M game, then a alot of bets are off.

First wife is in Houston 'burbs. Can't get out. No gas. Traffic jammed. She will lose their beach house and likely the main one.
Sockknitter, do as your husband recommends. If he's right, you can praise his judiciousness for a long time. If he's wrong, you've got a lifetime's worth of "I told you so" in the bank. Were I in your situation (thank you Jesus), I'd take my chances with the water rather than the trees.
That's terrible about your first wife, Ole. I hope she can get out on public transportation at least. But that would keep her from carrying much stuff, i suppose, like old family pictures.
Good idea about parking in the street. I can't say I'm driving my lifetime favorite car right now anyway. But I would hate to make an insurance claim in any event, and I believe most insurance does NOT cover flooding, although it does cover other damages. Actually I hope we're all just worrying too much.
