Default Upcoming Trip

My friend and I will be going to Fremont, Ohio over the July 4th weekend
to see the artifact display at the Rutherford B Hayes Center. During the CW,
Johnson's Island, which is on Lake Erie was a POW camp which held only
Confederate officers. It opened in '62, and was in operation throughout the
conflict. During their spare time, the prisoners would make various artifacts,
cups, just about anything to pass the time. A professor at Heidelberg
College and several students collected these various works and have put
them on display in Fremont. If any of you are in the Cleveland/Toledo areas
through the 4th, just stop by. Fremont is not far from either of those cities.

We are really looking forward to it!

Chuck;

not just officers, but political prisoners as well

also it was supposed to be the ONLY pow camp for the entire war (over in 90 days remember) but of course that didnt work out. You will enjoy the displays at the Hayes center, lots of great stuff from his ACW days there. Been there many times, we used to have an event there every year, i believe it is not being held anymore, but not sure, late fall....

Rbenne: Thanks alot for the info, didn't know about the political prisoners,
also the ONLY POW camp for the "90 day" war. I did see in the
travel section in the Sunday paper a small clip regarding the
Hayes Center, and a lady in period dress was pictured describing
various women's clothing of the times, but didn't see anything else.
Maybe there will be some info as to whether a re-enactment will
take place sometime in the near future. I'll let you know.

Injoy your trip,
I wanted to stop at rock island, Il. on my way to Motor, Iowa & back but never got a chance. was dark when I drove up.. And wanted to get closer to home before stoping for the night. I ended up stoping just north of the Tennessee State line and visited Fort Donelson yesterday morning.
