John,

Surprise! I don't agree with your conclusions concerning the reason the war came about. But, again, that is what is so interesting to me and the others on this board, how we all got here and the reason why we feel the way we do.

Thanks for the coffee and the seat around the campfire, John, and the chance to reflect on what brought me here.

Sincerely,
Unionblue

George,

Duh. Sorry. I was full to the brim with antibiotics when I posted my earlier message. My concluding sentence should, of course, have read something like "I treat with extreme caution anything negative which a non-Southern American has to say about that region and its people."

A less sweeping and perhaps more reasonable sentiment, I hope you'll agree.

"William do you see Hugh's offspring as traitors for taking up arms against the Crown when they came to this land?"

John, if I answer this many people may well lose the will to live...it's been covered to death on another thread! The short answer is "No."

Bill

John
"The unfair tariffs put on the South by the Fed.. Payed for 90% Feds income that was used in the North."
This would imply that the South purchased 90% of all imports. News to me, would love to know your source for this tidbit. If your using a chart from a book covering economics in the US showing the kinds of imports and taxing rate, I'd very much like to obtain that book as I'm interested in economics of the era related to the war.

PS...got any Krispy Kremes to go with the coffee??

The south was right,in the constitution it said that any state had the right to self Govern. The North Denied that to the Confederacy, and if it was all about the slaves why did Lincoln only pay the men of the 54th Mass.(first Black Regiment) only 10$ with a 3$ deduction for they're uniforms meaning they only get 7$ as to the white yank who got 13$,yep Lincoln cared for the blacks. There was also thousands of blacks who fought for the South, members of Jackson's staff were black. You have to remember the way of thinking too back then the South didn't think there was anything wrong with slavery it was just a way of life. I am a Southern reenactor I have been doing it for 19 years and its gotten to the point where I won't even put on a Blue coat even if you paid me, the South had more pride, they really believed it they're cause as for the Union they are just plain boring and I would never support an army that put a person like Burnside in charge...remember Fredricksburg. Hey I guess everyone is different in they're views right

Tim, remember Bragg... and Hood. The South had it's share of inept & outright incompetent generals. That's all I have to say about the competent Generals note. As to the pride issue, I don't think there was as much of a difference as you might think. Look to the Iron Brigade, the Irish Brigade along w/ less famous units such as the 1st & 2nd MN etc... ****ed proud men and as patriotic as they come. And a far cry from boring.

THe 54th Mass wasn't actually the first unit of black men mustered... That would have been the 1st LA, a unit that originally offered it's services to the CSA... but was refused. They had their own, black, officers. The numbers of Armed Black Confederates serving in the line beside white men is massively inflated. Only two companies were ever fielded by the CSA and they only in the last desperate moments of the war. There were individuals who served in units w/ Arkansas Regiments seeming to have the highest numbers. But the reality I think is that the numbers of Black Confederate fighting men were less than those of women who dressed as men to fight. There is an excellent thread w/ a lot of hot debate on the issue of Black Confederates.

The 1st La That was Wheat's Tigers, wasn't it, I portray a Louisiana Unit and I have never Heard that before. I don't really care about how many blacks fought for the south,I am just saying I wish people would look at other options for the cause of the war other than slavery. It gets boring having the same debate.

My apologies, I was referring to the 1st LA native guards... they were never mustered into CSA service. The problem is that I believe slavery was the root cause of it. There were other causes but my own belief is that a whole lot of men died for a few who decided to turn politics to war. Feel free to shop around the board, you'll find quite a few different opinions on what really started the war.
