An acquaintance of mine from another board recently found out that his great-great-grandfather was killed in action at Wilson's Creek. My acquaintance is now interested in going to visit that battlefield, but doesn't know much about what to look for. I imagine he would welcome advice, not only about what to see on the battlefield, but things like where to stay, where to eat, what other things to see in the area, etc.

Anyone have any advice that I could pass along to him?

Before you visit Wilson's Creek read "Wilson's Creek The Second Battle of the Civil War and the Men Who Fought It." Also be sure to visit General Sweeny's Museum in Republic Mo. which is a private museum off the Military Park, but very informative and worth wile. Be sure to see Bloody Hill in the Park. Enjoy!!!

Ps please excuse any typos I broke a finger on Thanksgiving day and one handed typing is a B***h.

George,

I knew Doug would have the answer.

Doug,
I type with one finger. Well I use my thumb to hit the spacebar.
That said you have my sincere regret that you broke your finger. Hope it heals swift and well.

Us hunt & pec types are the best typists in the world! Seriously though Doug's choice of reading is an absolute neccesity for anyone interested in the scrap at Wilson's Creek.

Enjoy.

I was trained to type too long ago just can't do that one or two finger stuff any more. But I am learning to compensate pretty well.

Oh yeah! There is a very good self guided tour book for Wilson's Creek put out by the Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth. I don't remember the exact title, but I found in our public library, shouldn't be too hard to find.

You also might suggest your friend try to get with a tour given by Connie Langum, the Wilson Creek Historian
They can also visit: a Wilson Creek website.
http://civilwartraveler.bravepages.com/WC/WCP1.htm
And I have a few pics from Wilsons Creek in the Muster 2003 photo pages.
There might be some photos of the battlefield on www.civilwarphotos.com
Another excellent book is "Bloody Hill-The Civil War Battle of Wilson's Creek" by William Riely Broksher

The book I mentioned earlier is "The Wilson's Creek Staff Ride and Battlefield Tour. By Major George E. Knapp U.S. Army, Retired The publisher is, Combat Studies Institute, US army Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. I wouldn't visit the battlefield without it.
Another good book is: Rebellion in Missouri: 161, Nathaniel Lyon and His Army of the west, Hans Christian Adamson, Chilton Company 1961.

A little Wilson's Creek triva. The name of the creek is actually Wilson Creek, the commanders got it wrong in their reports. A convention has arisen in writing about the battle, Wilson Creek refers to the creek, Wilson's Creek refers to the battle.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions. Before I pass them on to my friend, I'd like to ask Charles for one clarification.

Is Connie Langum a man or a woman?
