Default HELP with entering text

I sometimes get stuck when when I try to insert text text, it deletes the text in front of what I want to preceed it by. eg. I enter 'Grnt' and go back and try to put an 'a' in there, but when I try this, the 't' is disappeared.

What can I do to fix this? It seems to crop up out of nowhere. Am I hitting a wrong key somewhere that fouls up the entry system?

The "Insert" key on your keyboard is a toggle switch. Usually, when you first turn on your computer, it's set up in "insert" mode, so that when you try to edit previously-entered text, the new characters will be inserted at the cursor point without deleting any of the existing characters.

If you hit the "Insert" key once, it switches to "overtype" mode. When it's in overtype mode, whatever character you type in will replace the character immediately following the cursor. Apparently you had inadvertently hit the Insert key, so your keyboard was in overtype mode when you were having the problem you described.

All you should need to do is hit the "Insert" key again, and then you'll go back into insert mode.

See Hoosier's entire post above. This is another example of something really good for troopers to try as a test for DUI drivers. It ranks right up there with:
