SHILOH AND THE WESTERN CAMPAIGN OF 1862


I just received this and have not yet read it. I bought it based on a description I read on Amazon.

On brief examination, I can tell you this:

- It begins before Shiloh with the river campaigns in the west and ends with Corinth.
- Lots of maps, 33 of them.
- Photos of 36 CSA commanders and 30 USA commanders involved.
- Orders of battle.
- Casualties by Army and corps for the Battle of Shiloh
- A 22 photo tour of the Shiloh battlefield

Edward Cunningham, a young Ph.D. candidate studying under the legendary T. Harry Williams at Louisiana State University, researched and wrote Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 in 1966. Although it remained unpublished, many Shiloh experts and park rangers consider it to be the best overall examination of the battle ever written. Indeed, Shiloh historiography is just now catching up with Cunningham, who was decades ahead of modern scholarship.

Edward Cunningham, Ph.D., studied under T. Harry Williams at Louisiana State University. He was the author of The Port Hudson Campaign: 1862-1863 (LSU, 1963). Dr. Cunningham died in 1997.

Gary D. Joiner, Ph.D. is the author of One **** Blunder from Beginning to End: The Red River Campaign of 1864, winner of the 2004 Albert Castel Award and the 2005 A. M. Pate, Jr., Award, and Through the Howling Wilderness: The 1864 Red River Campaign and Union Failure in the West. He lives in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Timothy B. Smith, Ph.D., is author of Champion Hill: Decisive Battle for Vicksburg (winner of the 2004 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Non-fiction Award), The Untold Story of Shiloh: The Battle and the Battlefield, and This Great Battlefield of Shiloh: History, Memory, and the Establishment of a Civil War National Military Park. A former ranger at Shiloh, Tim teaches history at the University of Tennessee.


And finally, it is a Savas Beatie book.

I have it as well. It is said to be the newest, best ever interpretation of Shiloh. To the point that the Rangers have changed their presentations to conform to it. Am most anxious to get started on it, and just might, as soon as I've absorbed Stone's River. One day at a time.

And, yes, it is a Savas Beatie pub. That is a double-dog, hot-dang, garrr-on-teee that it is a must for anyone's library. Those guys only play in the big leagues.

James, you hit the nail on the head. You bunch of die hard battle study guys (I count myself in the group) were nocking down our door even before the book was at the printer. Only the very early purchasers have one of these titles.

I can tell you with absolute certainty there are about 225 copies outstanding (10 percent either way). Every copy sitting in our warehouse was put on hold (only about 30 slipped out before the hold went into effect), and the entire lot was shipped back and destroyed.
