Wisconsin in the Civil War Just finished Frank Klement's book "Wisconsin in the Civil War" It's a big, short book with lots of pictures. It relates the role of the state during the war, both on the battlefield and on the home front. There's some good information there. Because it's a short book, I can forgive its many omissions. What I don't like is its massive mistakes. He has Bragg commanding the 6th Wisconsin at Gettysburg. Bragg wasn't there. Dawes was in command. He has all the regiments of the Iron Brigade on McPherson's Ridge. The 6th was held in reserve and attacked the 2nd Mississippi in a railroad cut. He has the Iron Brigade reforming on Cemetary Ridge when it was Culp's Hill. He states that the Iron Brigade was the first brigade on the scene. Cutler's brigade was there first. The Black Hats were 10 minutes behind. There are other "mis-statements; but I'm sure you get my drift. Like I said, there's some good information; but one must be able to sort the facts from the fantasies.

__________________ My dear mother:- I have come safely through two more terrible engagements with the enemy, that at South Mountain and the great battle of yesterday (Antietam). Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj.
