I watched "Glory" again last night, with my headphones on. The music played in the very begining, which is I think "O Fortuna", is awesome behind the first images of the assembling and formation in preparation of the two vast armies, for the battle of Antietam. Posted up a couple of stills and a link to a video clip.

Look at the picture of the 54th massed before Wagner. Know what's wrong? The Atlantic Ocean should be on their right and not on their left! It's as if they attacked Wagner from the *******'s Point on the northern tip of the island instead of from the direction of the lighthouse and the Beacon house.
Glory is IMHO one of the finest CW movies made, that said it is horrible in what it leaves out, like the number of men who earned the MoH or some of the other fascinating snippets about the 54th Mass. It's a teaser, one of those movies that get you interested enough to start doing your own looking. My favorite char. is certainly the Irish Sgt Major... I remember TI's like that.

I never had a sense of the geography other than what the film shows. Don't know that much about the battle either except it was pretty hard on the 54th, Shaw included. Thanks for the heads up on the Carmina Burana, Gary. It's beautiful. Goes well with the solemnity of the beginning of the film. I'm not a classicly trained musician, but the piece seems to have an abundance of minor chords and dissonance, but not to distraction. I mean, it's a somewhat dark, ominous, unsettling, but beautiful piece of music.

Another video clip, a trailer. You might need windows media player on these. not sure. This one features the Carmina Burana piece behind the video. Very dramatic, stirring, and effective addition to the scene.

Great film. I've used it in class a few times. Shane is right, there is a lot left out, but in a movie, events are usually pared down and telescoped.
There were some inaccurate bits.
a. No flogging in the Union army in 1863. (although army punishment was harsh by our standards)
b. No sergeant Mulcahy, the 54th selected sergeants from their own ranks.
c. While in other black regiments, many soldiers used the opportunity to learn to read and write, the troops of the 54th already had the same literacy level as comparable white regiments.
d. While many other black regiments complained of shortages of equipment and uniforms, the 54th, with its blue blood officers, and backing from Governor Andrew of Massachusetts avoided most of this.
In a sense, the inaccuracies of the movie were truer of the experience of other black troops.
My favorite character is ANYTHING or ANYONE protrayed by Morgan Freeman in any movie ever made. If he was picked to be the next Pee-Wee Herman, I'm sure that he'd be amazing and that I'd watch it.
