Gary:
Did that make it out of radio? Picture: Harry Carey, Jr. is a youthful Lieutenant of the US Cav guarding Reb prisoners in upstate Idaho when the Nez Perce begin their uprising and require General Miles (Lon Chaney, Sr.) to round up both the renegades and escaped Reb POWs. Lillian Gish plays the love interest and Lionel Barrymore with his sidekick, Wallace Beery, interfere all they can.

It must be not kosher to use the words of an American icon when responding to an ethnic slur.

Default Cavalry Charge & Major Dundee

Spirit of Pickett,

There are two films, the aggregate of which, may comprise the picture you saw ages ago.

1) Major Dundee (1965) 136 mins., with Charlton Heston as the Federal commander of a southwest post housing Confederate POWs commanded by Richard Harris. Heston & Harris combine forces to chase raiding Apaches into Mexico & kill them. The film ends with a border fight against French forces in order to recross the Rio Grande.

2) Cavalry Charge (1951) 88 mins., aka The Last Outpost, with Ronald Reagan commanding CSA forces raiding gold shipments along the Santa Fe Trail & Bruce Bennett commanding USA forces sent to stop the raids. Bennett doesn't know that the opposing commander is his brother Reagan. Mix in the brother's competition for love interest Rhonda Fleming. This wasn't called the Brothers' War for nothing. The film ends with the CSA forces charging the Apaches about to wipe out the USA forces.

I recommend two titles regarding the War & film. Blue & The Gray on the Silver Screen: More Than 80 Years of Civil War Movies, 1996 by Roy Kinnard. The Reel Civil War: Myth Making In American Film, 2001 by Bruce Chadwick.

Hope this is of service.

I remember other CW movies that I have seen.

Drums in the Deep South (1951) - The story concerns a Confederate effort to thwart Sherman's advance on Atlanta. Strange to say, however, Georgia seems to have been transplanted to the wild west for purposes of the film, which comes complete with a mesa on which the Confederates desire to plant their cannon and fire upon the railroad below. Throw in a love triangle and some of the most uninspired acting you can obtain and you have DRUMS IN THE DEEP SOUTH. (someone`s comment: Invaders From Mars Meets Gone With The Wind )

The Horse Soldiers (1959) - Union Cavalry outfit is sent behind confederate lines in strength to destroy a rail/supply centre. Along with them is sent a doctor who causes instant antipathy between him and the commander. The secret plan for the mission is overheard by a southern belle who must be taken along to assure her silence. The Union officers each have different reasons for wanting to be on the mission.

Based on the true story of Col. Benjamin H. Grierson. In the Spring of 1863, Grierson left bases in northern Mississippi, taking 1,700 troopers with him. According to Bruce Catton, Grierson "drove through central Mississippi, tearing up railroads and upsetting [Confederate General] Pemberton's troop deployments before reaching Union-held Baton Rouge."

The Undefeated (1969) - After the Civil War, ex-Union Colonel John Henry Thomas and ex-Confederate Colonel James Langdon are leading two disparate groups of people through strife-torn Mexico. John Henry and company are bringing horses to the unpopular Mexican government for $35 a head while Langdon is leading a contingent of displaced southerners, who are looking for a new life in Mexico after losing their property to carpetbaggers. The two men are eventually forced to mend their differences in order to fight off both bandits and revolutionaries, as they try to lead their friends and kin to safety.
