Default Campfires & Battlefields

Johnson, Rossister, Campfires and Battlefields, Civil War Press, 1967.

This is a superb coffee table book w/ a little bit of everything from the politics to the men who fought the battles. Something like 1000 pictures and sketches & 532 pages of interesting text. While it concentrates a bit too much on the eastern theatre for my taste... it's certainly a good informative work.

I believe this book is only available through the second hand market; well worth the cost. I guarantee it wil be a valuable doorstop or coffee table anchor when you are finally bored with it...

My wife has a copy of this book, probably acquired in college. The detail is there if you can find it. The editor must have been slighly intoxicated when he put this one together. Very difficult to follow any kind of logical sequence of events. Lots of photographs of folks you won't see anywhere else. Good weight for an anchor. Poor printing, at least the copy I have, though the price was right!

I agree w/ the editor likely being intoxocated... but I have a tendency to pick it up & randomly read a section.

Yes, I agree, the book does have it's value. Lots of individual officers shown in photos who are otherwise a bit of a challenge to find. Problem is the random locations and the fact the photos may occasionally have nothing to do with the text. I found, for intstance, a well done account of the skirmish at Philadelphia, Tennessee 20 Oct 1863 which is otherwise a bit of a challenge to locate!
