The original 4 vol. set edited by Johnson and Buell published by Century, 1884-1888 (?)
There appear to be many different versions and/or editions of these and I'm trying sort figure out what's what.
I've found:
-----
4 Vol. sets:
same editors, published by Thomas Yoseloff 1956
same editors, published by Castle (Booksales) 1885
I'm guessing these are just like the originals, but am unsure.
-----
A one volume version 'by Ned Bradford' (Plume, 1989 or Gramercy, 2001 and other editions) - I'm guessing this is a highly edited version of the original 4 volumes?
-----
A volume 5 and a volume 6, edited by Cozzens - I'm guessing these are efforts by Cozzens to supplement/add to the originals?
-----
A 10 volume set edited by F T Miller, published by Easton in 1995 - I'm not sure if this is completely different, or a version of the original, broken down differently?
Can anyone help me sort these out and/or give me any other info/advice on these?

Correct. The original 4 vols. were all taken from Century Mag, while Cozzens set takes from Century and other magazines of the era. These articles appeared in Harper's, Hearst's, McClure's, Ohio Soldiers, the Magazine of American History and other similar publications. Until now, these writings have been mostly unknown to modern readers. Articles by the military and civilian leader, North and South, on a broad array of war-related topics.f
I have both 5&6, but only have read Vol.5 so far.
Another book thats interesting is "The New Annals of the Civil War", edited by Cozzens and Robert L. Girardi. this book is a follow up to the {Annals of the Civil War-Written by Leading Participants North and South}. Which, by the war, were articles appearing in Washington's National Tribune.
The "new Annals" are taken from the Philadelphia Times-which ran a series called Annals of War:Chapters of Unwritten History' form 1877 thru 1889, also Scribner's, Atlantic Monthly, Harper'sNew Monthly, and even from Century Mag, after the 4 vol. "Battles and Leaders" was published.
I have both of these vols. also.

B&L are in public domain as is anything published before 1900 (forgot the exact date but it's well beyond 1900). If you want, you can publish your own version of B&L.
I became somewhat more familiar with "Battles and Leaders" due to Dons use of it as much of his source material for the thread on Sickles. Sam posted several sites where it could be accessed, and Gary advised on how they were now part of the public domain. Thanks to all you guys. I think I've found the full text of the first 4 volumes on this link -
I've just kind of skimmed it so far, but it looks as though the entire text is there. (first 4 volumes).

Yeah I wonder how many black ink carts it would take to print all that out? Don't know if my little HP could do it.

Guys, don't be cheap. Buy it used if you must. If you become a serious CW researcher, you'll find yourself turning to B&L quite frequently as it is quite invaluable because of all those first hand accounts by the eye-witnesses/participants. B&L deserves a place on the shelf of any serious CW student.
Roger that Gary. There's no way my back would hold up for the time it would take to read it online, and I ain't printing it out for sure. I'd like to get a used set someday. Probably will try Amazon or Abebooks.
