A wicked battle For those of you who are curious about the Iron Brigade I would recommend the book "In the Bloody Railroad Cut at Gettysburg" by Lance Herdegen and William Beaudot. This book provides a graphic narative of a wicked battle on the first day of Gettysburg. The 6th Wisconsin was held in reserve while the rest of the Iron Brigade duked it out with Archer's unit. They were rushed to the Union right and encountered the 2nd Mississippi who were down in an uncompleted railroad cut. A tale of incredible bravery. Check it out

__________________ My dear mother:- I have come safely through two more terrible engagements with the enemy, that at South Mountain and the great battle of yesterday (Antietam). Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj.
