A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie by Stephen Ambrose was published in 1961 and is an excellent collection of letters of a soldier of the Union Army. The letters of James Newton of the 14th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment are a wonderful look into the life of a soldier as he fought the Civil War. Full of wit and humor as well as the stories of a man in the service of his nation this is another must read for those interested in the everyday life of the common soldier during the Civil War.

However, it is never I who am guilty, but those other Americans, the past or present government or the other political party. Americans almost never find other countries guilty. It is always ourselves or our fancied influence in other countries. Louis L'amour |
