This book contends that rich Planters took Georgia out of the Union against the majority of citizens wishes, along with other areas of disaffections from the 'plain folk.'

The majority of Georgians were really Unionists? It seems a miracle they found anyone at all to serve in the ranks of the Confederate armies. Perhaps that’s why they performed so badly and the war ended in 1862.

And the majority of South Carolinians were really Republicans. And the majority of soldiers who surrendered at Appomattox were really abolitionists. And they’d actually wanted to lose the war all along. Which is why they were grateful to those nice Northerners for liberating them.

Bill,

Tsk, tsk, my friend of little faith. You have of course read this book and evaluated the sources? You are of course not going to claim that everyone in the South, and in the State of Georgia, supported secession?

Boys, Boys, I don't want to interfere in this exchange of such dubious jocularity but I thought I would add one small piece of my $5.00 kindling to your fire:

This is what I found concerning Georgia and the Union's big support during the WBTS. http://www.civil-war.net/searchstate...states=Georgia

Union - Troops Furnished and Deaths

Georgia

Killed and Mortally Wounded:
0

Died of Disease:
13

Died as Prisoner:
0

Died from Accidents:
0

Died from all Causes except Battle:
2

Total Deaths:
15

Furnished White Troops:
0

Furnished Sailors and Marines:
0

Furnished Colored Troops:
0

Furnished Indian Nations:
0

Aggregate Furnished:
0

I hardly think these figures support the idea that Georgia was secretly overwhelmingly Unionist.

Leaving you now with that tiny morsel, I'm off to eat supper, as we still call it here in the South.

Goodnight, Fellas.

I notice further in the book, The Book of Lists this information:

The States and Territories Ranked by Black Troops Recruited for Union Service:

State: 17. Georgia
Number: 3,486
% of Blacks Recruited: 0.7%
% of Black Residents: 0.3%
