The US government first attempted to control slavery in 1787 with the Northwest Ordinance in that it prohibited slavery in the land area it covered, which became 5 new states, and by creating the Fugitive Slave Law

In 1787-1789 with the US Constitution the US government and its people attempted to control slavery by allowing the end of the slave trade through imports after 20 years or January 1, 1808.

Just prior to 1808 the US Congress outlawed the slave trade at the earliest Constitutionally allowed point noted above.

In 1820 the US Congress in the Missouri Compromise created 36* 30" N latitude as a northern limit to the further spread of slavery after Missouri became a slave state.

In the 1848 Mexican Cession none of that new territory allowed slavery.

In 1850 the US Congress passed 5 separate laws known as the Compromise of 1850 which outlawed the slave trade in Washington, DC; admitted the new and free state of California, strengthened the Fugitive Slave Law, and made it a crime not to help catch escaped slaves.

In 1854 the US Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act that did away with the 36* 30' N latitude as the limit on slavery which overturned the Missouri Compromise, and introduced popular sovereignty as the method of deciding the slavery issue in the new territories.

It is clear from the legislation above that the US government attempted to control slavery in both the South and the new territories from 1787 until the Civil War. Slavery was an important issue in America. To deny that is to not follow basic historical facts.

I ain't on no drugs, Pard. And that's a fact. Tom on that other site ticked me off on that issue. Let's don't go there, okay. I ain't even had any ibuprofen yet today. I don't smoke and I don't drink. I probably do spend too dang much time on the Internet and it probably does make me a little crazy. But I'm crazy like a fox, Cash. Crazy like a fox.

I want to get along. I want to help people. I want to take care of myself and my family and my friends. I want to do what's right and I want to fight evil.

I see you all talkin' about this stuff and I don't think you're right. I think you're believing the lies they've been feeding US for decades. I think they've been feedin' US these lies settin' the stage for what's to come.

You all may not believe it, but you've got to admit, a whole heck of a lot of US do believe it.

Why do you think they call it the Empire State Cash?

Did they called it that before 1865?

Hell No. They created a empire for themselves right out of our blood, sweat and tears. Your's and Mine. Our ancestor's blood, sweat and tears. And it's THEIR empire Cash. Not Our's. From Sea to Shinning Sea.

Northern Interests. Brahamin Yankess. International Financiers. Banks, Factories, Mines, and Railroads. Thier's. Not Our's.

Dear Cash,

I've played this game already with OIJ.

You're on your own.

Good Luck,

Hey Ozark...

They know I'm right...
...but they would rather eat snakes and a side order of live bees than concede in the matter.

It cuts them to the heart.

Battalion,

It cuts nowhere near our hearts.

Our funnybone, yes, but not our hearts.

Please allow me to express my sincere apologies for stomping on any/all of you all's toes. When I said "ya'll have been sold a bill of goods" to Cash, I was NOT speaking directly too Cash. I was NOT speaking directly too any one of you gentlemen specifically. I was speaking generally, metaphorically.

"Ya'll have been sold a bill of goods." Lies, half-truths, mis-representations. It ain't your fault.

Like for instance when Attornery General A. Gonzales say's "I don't know", "I don't remember", "I can't recall Senator". Pleading the Fifth. Bull-Hockery. They've been telling US crap like that for three generations.

Yankee publishers and their Union Blue editors have been pushing their pet darlings on US and white washing the truth for three generations. Cover Up. White Wash. Expunge details from the Official Record.

It ain't nothing you all have anything to do with. Not even unionblue who work's for 'em.

I have no doubt you gentlemen are good students of American history. I have no dobut you worked hard and studied a lot. I have no doubt the you are intelligent and keen witted enough to decipher the difference and read between the lines sifficiently to discren the truth. But it ain't there. They've had 145 years to cover their tracks and spread their lies, half-truths and propoganda.

Please accept my apology for ruffeling your feathers, but please understand, my purpose is to make you think, to make you question conventional wisdom, to help you see things from a different perspective. If you continually look at history through blue tinted glasses, you will NEVER see the truth and it will NEVER set you FREE.

Default The North's opposition to Slavery in the Territories.....

Back to the subject of this thread. As in most unscientific and biased polls. The answer to this particualr poll can, in fact, be 'both' 'either' Or "neither' depending on the perception (or lack thereof) of the individual answering the poll.
In this case, the 'correct' answer is 'both' The North opposed slavery in the Territories for the 'political' purpose of gaining an 'unbeatable' majority in Congress, in order that the 'moral' objective of eradicating slavery from the USA Forever, could be accomplished.
