Still false. California and Oregon and several other states were more Western than Northern in outlook. It appears what you really mean by "the North" is "the Free States".

Default North?

For these discussions, it would actually be helpful to define 'the North' - do we include or exclude the border states?

Slavery is absolutely killing the south politically and economically. Politically, they're not attracting immigrants, and that will cost them in the House, economically they're not industrializing and this is not surprising inasmuch as slavery acts as a subsidy to labor and there is less incentive to invest in labor saving machines.

cw1865,

Excellent, calm, and well thought out observations for your part.

Now, duck, before the next editorial salvo.

Sincerely,
Unionblue

I'm gonna start posting all of my messages in unionblue. That way the more Radical Republican amongst US will find it more difficult to find fault with anything / everything I have to say on the subject. If its in unionblue text, it's gotta be right. Right?

I think the north objection to new slave states was a true moral and ethical concern but it was the southern politicians that were always whining about who controls the federal government and congress not the northern politicians.
