The Union Army fielded 25 corps. Each Roman numeraled corps consisted of, at least, three divisions. The divisions of a corps wore the Corps insignia in different colors on their cap or left breast. The 1st wore it in red, the 2nd white, the 3rd blue, and if a there were a 4th and a 5th; green and orange. Originally the badges were cut from colored cloth into the various corps shapes and evolved to the intricate badges illustrated.
